January 18, 2024, Thursday, McMurdo Sound

Snow and wind have retreated somewhat leaving views of Mt. Erebus. We are about 10 miles from the McMurdo US Station. Although there was talk of an icebreaker coming in and opening up the channel for us so that we could drive right in, that idea dissolved for another day.

We walked out on the ice this morning. It was more friendly than our previous day’s excursion. The Adelies were out along with a solitary Emperor penguin readily himself for the catastrophic molt plus the occasional seal.

Surrounded by water, lunch was sushi. Quite a success since the majority of the ship climbed up to Greens (8th Floor) to enjoy the buffet.

The afternoon zodiac ride exposed Type C whales (killer) and minkes.
