White-out, Blowing snow, wind, and swells. Our goal is to get out in a zodiac for a morning ride to shore so that we may spend time in Scott’s Hut from the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913). It does not look promising. Magically, the winds let up enough for us to suit up for a chilly ride and short hike to the hut.

Constructed of prefabricated materials, Scott’s Hut is the largest building constructed in Antarctica at the time was erected in 9 days. Scott and his team were on the way to participating in what would become known as “The Worst Journey in the World” and ultimately Scott’s demise.

Bucking across the inlet, we arrive on shore during a snow storm and walked 400 m up to building. We bio-decontaminate prior to entering. The conservation took 7 years and now contains over 11,000 artefacts. The AHT also is responsible for monitoring and maintaining the space. It feels quite comfortable with a horse stable, laboratory, private cubicle for Scott, and dark room in addition to the necessities of a kitchen and commissary goods.

Above the hut is the Wind Vane Hill which is a memorial to Shackleton’s Ross Sea party and individuals lost on the Ross Barrier.

Returning to the ship, we are treated to a tour of the galley and the ship’s food storage areas while knoshing on beef sandwich and fresh ice cream, with liquors for tea time.

Evening was a rousing open mike performance by crew and guests.
