The night offered a number of loud crashes with the ice floats. At 4 AM, I found myself on the bridge in brilliant blue light and massive ice surrounding the ship. After returning to bed, a 6 AM wake-up was contrasted with a gray sky and open water.
The morning was filled with a sighting of an Emperor penguin on an ice flow in which Jane Younger, our resident microbiogy ecologist researcher, was escorted onto the ice after the penguin’s departure to collect a valuable deposit. Later a number of whales were playing around the bow for our photo opportunity. This along with a corridor of tabula bergs were amazing sights.
