January 1, 2024, Monday, The Drake and Peninsula, At-Sea

An extra hour of sleep and life is bright. First lecture is a whale of a presentation. Lunch with Anne, dive naturalist, a mile hike around the deck, lecture on bio-security and gear check comprised the morning fare.

Icebergs are starting to show up more often as we continue our southern descent. We weather a zodiac and kayak lecture for safety. Then turned loose for the Captain’s cocktail party. Our first glimpse of Aaron Wood whom we had not met yet was hosting the event and sprang for a few words and introduced some of his officers. The sun plays hide-and-seek all afternoon with glimpses of beautiful icebergs radiating on the white islands in the ocean,

We cross the Antarctic Circle tonight at 10:30 PM and will not see another cruise ship for 3-4 weeks. Tonight we are aiming for Margarette Bay, where we look forward to our first descent off the ship: kayaking in the morning and a zodiac trip thereafter.
